Turi Simeti is one of the best-known representatives of the Italian ZERO movement. Born in Alcamo, Sicily, in 1929, he moved to Rome at the age of 30, where he began painting as an autodidact after meeting Alberto Burri in his studio. During this time, he also spent longer periods in London, Paris and Basel. Following the artistic trend of the time against expressive work, Simeti devoted himself to monochrome techniques and began to use the ellipse as a geometric element, which was to become a "trademark" of his works.
In 1965 Simeti moved to Milan, where he joined the ZERO group, which also included Enrico Castellani and Agostino Bonalumi. As part of this young generation of Italian artists and together with other pioneers from Europe, South America and Japan, he took part in the legendary exhibition "ZERO Avantgarde" in Lucio Fontana's studio in Milan, alongside artists such as Heinz Mack and Otto Piene.
Turi Simeti lives in Milan. His works are in important collections such as the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bolzano (Bolzano, Italy), the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna (Turin, Italy) and the Wilhelm Hack Museum, Ludwigshafen.
