Painting Cryo-Painting, oil inversion on canvas

195 x 115 cm

The artist about his work: "Following a process-oriented philosophy, I create works with nature and embedded in it. Rain, cold, ice, hail or sun affect my paintings and through the direct effect of the forces of nature, the themes of time, light and material take on an essential meaning in my work." Edelbert Köb says of Ty Waltinger's work: "Between science and the secret art of alchemy, he seeks the "philosopher's stone" of painting. He finds it in the world of nature, of substances, pigments, solvents, binders and forces."

The so-called Cryo-Paintings captivate through their creation process in the cold. The moisture contained in the oil inversion freezes and evokes ice crystals, which become visible on the canvas. These ice crystals, preserved by the artist, speak a formal language that differs from the rain paintings, whereby nature is always to be understood as the co-author of the works.

Born in Vienna in 1962, Waltinger studied painting & graphics. He learned original painting techniques of Venetian panel paintings as well as old Japanese brush techniques. In 1993 he began to develop a special layer painting technique with natural pigments. Waltinger's work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in Austria, Switzerland and Germany; in addition to painting, it also includes film projects, photographic works and sound images in performances by music ensembles.
