Megert uses mirrors to break and change forms and ultimately create a new space. The construction of an illusory space through mirror reflection is Megert's specific technique to bring forth the "new space" called for in his 1961 manifesto "EIN NEUER RAUM". The manifesto was a call to "rethink everything spatial" with the "help of art". In Megert's work, image and real space intertwine. To achieve this, the artist explores reflections in all their facets. He dynamises the material by cutting it up, splintering it, painting over it or glazing it.
Christian Megert had several exhibitions together with the group ZERO, with whom he created a series of environments and kinetic objects. In 1973 he moved to Düsseldorf, where he was professor for the integration of visual arts and architecture at the Kunstakademie from 1976 to 2002. He has created numerous large sculptures in stone for the Music Centre in Amsterdam, the city of Maastricht, the Federal Garden Show in Düsseldorf, and for the municipality of Vaduz, among others. Megert lives and works in Düsseldorf and Bern.
