Painting with acrylic and iron on canvas
Mass: 220 x 180 x 6.50 cm
Artistically, Gasteiger is a border crosser in the regions between painting, drawing and sculpture, which he forces to self-examine by overplaying and blurring their boundaries. He shows that a painting is not created solely by a colour applied with a brush, a drawing not only by a line on a surface, a sculpture not only by a body in space. He shifts and expands identities - the picture is drawing, is sculpture. The liveliness and movement of Gasteiger's work emerges from the open question of the transitions between surface and space, material and immaterial, of the simultaneity of specific qualities of image, drawing and object in the integrity of a work.
Jakob Gasteiger, born in Salzburg, lives in Vienna and in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria. He answered in the affirmative to the question whether he is a painter and whether what he makes are pictures, because for most of his works the agreements for a picture are fulfilled - paint on a rectangular canvas hung on the wall. A special characteristic of his works, however, is that they also transcend the traditional provisions of painting. Since 1984, renowned galleries and museums throughout the German-speaking world have been showing Jakob Gasteiger's works in solo exhibitions.
