Rühle's family comes from Gdansk, Rühle grew up in Erlangen. From 1955 to 1963 he was a pupil of Christian Klaiber, who in turn had been a pupil of Henri Matisse and Fernand Léger. From 1963 to 1966 Rühle studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Berlin (now UDK). After long working stays in Andalusia, Paris and Cologne, he settled in Vincennes near Paris in 1975. Today he is a French citizen.
In the mid-1970s, Rühle developed a special painting technique for his mostly large-format canvases. To do this, he used large wooden boards and raw planks with which he pressed impasto paint onto the canvas. After removing the boards, imprints of the board structure remained visible and traces of abrasion were created, which, in addition to intense colour values, lend the paintings a strong surface texture. Ruehle's work is represented in numerous important collections, such as the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain Paris, the Musée d'Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, the Collection Peter Stuyvesant Amsterdam, the Ludwig Museum Budapest BRED and the Sammlung Ludwig Aachen Stadt Erlangen.
